Geelong, a waterfront city strategically situated 75 kilometers southwest of Melbourne, is more popularly known as the “city by the bay”. It has been the most accessible gateway to the popular attractions of the Great Ocean Road and the Bellarine Peninsula.

The city is located in the Corio Bay, the shores of which accommodate a variety of Geelong's recreational spots for tourists and locals. During a fine weather, Melbourne's skyscrapers can beautifully be viewed from the shores of Geelong. The prominent Eastern Beach provides a safe swimming enclosure, children's pools, dressing pavilion, and kioks for its visitors. The area also houses several Art Deco inspired buildings from the 1930's which are encrypted in the Victorian Heritage Register.

The Barwon River runs through the city and its suburbs. It houses several recreational spots in Geelong, and one of the best is the Baylang Sanctuary. The river has also been a nice spot where rowing regatta competitions such as the "Head of the River" are held.

If you look for a relaxing time, the vineyards of Geelong and Bellarine can be accessed with just a short drive from the city. There are also organized winery tours offered by a variety of companies. You can also visit around the historic National Wool Museum and the Old Geelong Gaol for an informative tour.

If you want to enjoy more of the city’s scenic view, then get a tour from one of the Bay City Sea Planes or Geelong Helicopters. These aircrafts depart from the Barwon Heads Airport or Geelong waterfront and can tour you around Geelong and its surrounds. The “Go Birding Tour” is one of the most relaxing trips around Geelong. It is an ecotour that brings you to the Geelong Otway Region, one of the finest birding spots in Victoria.

If you would like to experience some unique festive celebrations, then come on the month of October to witness their annual Royal Geelong Show held at the Geelong Showground. Other local festivities include the Pako Festa every February, Gala Day Parade and Family Fun Day every November and the Geelong Heritage Festival every April.

Geelong was named in 1837 by Governor Richard Burke. The name is derived from the Wathaurong Aboriginal name for the region: Jillong means ‘a place of the sea bird over the white cliff’'. The city is located on beautiful Corio Bay and besides the Barwon River; 75 kilometres (47 mi) south-west of Melbourne. The population of Greater Geelong is 210,000; it is Victoria’s second city. This waterfront city has a diverse range of attractions including parks and gardens, museums and galleries, fine restaurants and excellent recreational facilities. Geelong's colonial history has resulted in a legacy of historic buildings, some of which are open to the public, courtesy of the National Trust.
